After a long breakaway the team Neri Sottoli – Selle Italia – KTM has achieved the second podium of this Tour of Utah thanks to Simone Velasco, 3rd in the 5th stage.
The rider from the Island of Elba was very active since the start as he was able to join the 11 riders breakaway able to resist to the come back of the Yellow Jersey Group.
After reaching the maximum gap of 5’00” just at the bottom of the final KOM of the day, with a section of “sterrato”, the front group was disintegrated by several attacks with Dylan Sunderland, first rider to make a move, that was caught with 2 kms from the top by Lachlan Morton and Hayden McCormick.
Velasco, with a huge come back, was 20″ behind the two leaders before taking some risks in the downhil and then winning the sprint of his group but this wasn’t enough for the stage win as Morton and McCormick were able to stay up in front and at the end the rider from Education First could celebrate his win at the fotofinish.
Velasco achieved his fourth podium in the season, and this is his 9th top 10 of a very succesful year.
Tomorrow big ending in Park City with the Empire Pass climb that should decide the final GC of this Tour of Utah
